I recently learned that a young woman named Carlene Ho who attended the same middle school at the same time as I did, passed away. A few months ago, she was out for the day with friends at a lake, and they apparently left Carlene briefly on shore while they went to swim to a nearby island. Carlene could not swim. Her friends came back to find her face down in the water, and were unable to revive her with CPR. I can only surmise that she attempted to follow them to the island, and drowned in the process.
Come 2014, it will only be recommended that students be able to pass the San Francisco Unified School District's swimming proficiency test, it still a requirement for all public high schools at the time Carlene was attending Abraham Lincoln High School. If I remember correctly, the test consists of being able to swim two laps, (forward and back along the length of the pool,) using any stroke, and treading water for one minute. A little daunting if you don't know how to swim, but also a pretty reasonable requirement. However, the number of students being waived of having to take this test by doctor's notes and the like has been increasing, and resulted in the school board deciding it should no longer be required for graduation.
San Francisco is a peninsula, surrounded by water. (Not to mention also major earthquake territory.) Granted, people don't often swim in the Bay or Ocean because they're both so horribly cold, but there are still pools at hotels, lakes, beaches that can tempt on day trips and vacations. If the swim test requirement had been enforced, maybe Carlene would still be here. Finding the time and a pool to learn might be difficult with the busy schedule of a student, but it is still a skill that can save lives- your own, or that of a friend.
Peace be with you, Carlene.

sexy geisha costumes and asian culture
After seeing an article http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2012/09/26/sexy-little-geisha-more-victoria-s-secret-controversies.html about the recently pulled Sexy Little Geisha teddy from the Go East line by Victoria's Secret, I remembered that Halloween is just over a month away, and how much Asian-themed/inspired costumes tend to bother me. i'd like to note for anyone reading this that this is strictly my own opinion.
So I accept the fact that there will probably never, ever be a Halloween consisting of only politically correct costumes, and that because the United States is less than 5% Asian, there will probably never be an "accurate"
Blah blah blah
So... blah blah Hunger Games, Josh Hutcherson, Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth were here for a tour, blah blah went at 5am to try to get in line, said NO OVERNIGHT CAMPING, people were there at 4pm the day before. Didn't get to meet them, but it was crazy down there, and fan girls make a me a little crazy. Josh and Liam were each asked "will you go to prom with me."
But whatever. Went back to U-village the next day with a friend where we got free mini-facials at L'Occitane, goodie bags of free samples, and AWESOME new bag made from movie film strips, and tasty chocolate WITHOUT hoards of screaming fangirls around. I heard one girl fainted

I got my FIRST EVER SNOWDAY on tuesday because it snowed up a storm, and Seattle is not prepared to deal with anything much more than half an inch of snow. this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rhZCyQ3emQg&feature=player_embedded is what happens when you get icy roads in Seattle. They were planning to reopen campus on Wednesday, but ended up closing all three. So i got TWO SNOWDAYS IN A ROW, didn't have to my psych midterm, and a fantastic six day weekend.

SOGLEESEASONTWOSTARTSTONIGHTANDI'MKINDARIDICULOUSLYEXCITED. obviously. i'm excited to see that new Filipino girl perform, but I have very little respect for her after she got botox. But it'll be fun watching Rachel have some real competition. I'm even more excited too, for the Britney episode next week, and throughly looking forward to the Rocky Horror episode. Maybe the Rocky Horror episode will be a Halloween one. I'm also crossing my fingers that they bring back JONATHAN GROFF to play JESSE ST.JAMES, because he's amazing and I love him.
I leave for college in TWO DAYS, and i haven't started packing, and there's still all this shoppi
